From Rest Stop to Response Hub
Gwinnett County commissioners selected Carroll Daniel to construct a new Georgia State Patrol post and HERO unit station on the 12-acre site of a former I-85 rest area in Suwanee, Georgia. The rest area was closed in 2005 and has been used as storage space since then. Giving new life to the space, the 10,797 SF facility will allow for quicker response times for troopers in northern Gwinnett County, decreasing the amount of time an accident on a major highway results in a traffic jam.
A Permanent Home for Georgia State Troopers & HEROs
The new facility included command staff offices, day rooms for Georgia State Troopers and HEROs, classroom space, evidence storage, and a dormitory for 16 troopers. This project also involved the addition of covered parking and various site improvements. Operating from a temporary, leased space since 2013, the Georgia Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety were glad the state patrol unit would now have a permanent home in Gwinnett County.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Georgia State Patrol Public Information Officer Stephanie Stallings stated, “I’ve seen their (temporary) facilities on Plaster Avenue, and it’s been a great holding place for the time being, but this will be a much better spot.”
Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash shared similar remarks, “State patrol has been patient. They’ve been in temporary facilities that were never designed to serve the needs of a state patrol post, but they made it work.”
