An Award-Winning Facility
Carroll Daniel Construction earned a first place award from the Design-Build Institute of America for this project, which involved the replacement of the media race tower and suites building and construction of a new medical center at Road Atlanta Raceway.
Noise Restrictions – An Unheard of Challenge
One of the biggest challenges to working on an active racetrack is something most people might not consider. It’s the noise, the never-ending, deafening noise of cars running on the track. Most of the construction workforce wore full hearing protection daily until the building envelope was completed. This added complexity to our safety program and enhanced our communication strategy throughout the project.
Race to the Finish
The largest event the track hosts each year is the International Motor Sports Association’s Motul Petit Le Mans, a 10-hour endurance road race. The Petit Le Mans draws a crowd of 100,000+ spectators and competitors from all over the world. The race tower is critical for this event as it houses media suites, telecommunications, scoring, timing and race operations. All construction activities had to be scheduled between the close of the 2018 Petit Le Mans Race and the start of the 2019 race. There was absolutely no alternative to having the new tower ready. Despite design changes and additions that continued right up to the grand opening, the tower was ready on time for the 2019 race.
Fun Fact: Carroll Daniel Built the original Race Tower in the 1970s.
